Cucurbita (Latin for gourd) is a genus of herbaceous vines in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, also known as cucurbits are native to the Andes and Mesoamerica. They are grown worldwide for their edible fruit, variously known as squash, pumpkin, or gourd. Squash comes in two types, Summer and Winter.

Summer squash are thin-skinned with a lighter, moist flesh. They are best eaten fresh. Courgettes are the most popular summer squash.

Winter squash have a harder skin and dense flesh with a more intense flavour. They can be stored for a few months, sometimes up to a year after harvest. Pumpkins and Butternuts are the most famous of the winter squashes.

Black Futsu is a great-tasting black green coloured winter squash which will turn grey and then orange as it fully matures, but it can be picked at any time, which means you can have lots of different coloured squash.

Sow seed on edge 1.5cm (1/2") deep in large modules or 8cm pots from April - May under glass at 20C (68F). Harden and transplant at 60-150cm apart.

Keep well watered if the weather is dry after planting and harvest the squashes when ready from September and before the first frosts.
