Roma is a popular plum tomato used for paste. It has a thick fruit wall, fewer seeds and a dense, firm flesh.
It is a Medium late type that can be grown outside or under glass.
Great for making fresh tomato sauce or preserving.
Roma tomatoes are determinate, which means that the fruit ripens at one time, rather than continually through the season. While they can be eaten raw, they are at their best when they are cooked.
Sow seeds in a heated propagator or warm windowsill from Jan (I usually sow end of Feb-March). Sow in a tray approximately 1cm deep in compost.
Tomato plants grow very large so don’t sow too many or you will have nowhere to plant them all.
Once the plants have grown their first true leaves they can be potted on into individual pots and placed in a warm, sunny location(preferably a south facing window or conservatory).
Plant out about 50-75cm apart into a cool greenhouse or outside from the end of May or after the last frost and the temperature has warmed a bit. If you decided to sow your seeds in January, they should be very large by now and usually quite leggy which is why I recommend sowing later.
Keep plants well fed and watered and pinch out side shoots on indeterminate tomatoes.
OUR SEEDS ARE SPECIALLY SELECTED FOR UK CONDITIONS AND SOURCED FROM ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE, SOIL ASSOCIATED ORGANIC GROWERS.
ALL OUR PACKAGING IS RECYCLABLE, BIODEGRADABLE AND COMPOSTABLE.
