They are grown worldwide for their edible fruit, variously known as squash, pumpkin, or gourd. Squash comes in two types, Summer and Winter.
Summer squash are thin-skinned with a lighter, moist flesh. They are best eaten fresh. Courgettes are the most popular summer squash.
Winter squash have a harder skin and dense flesh with a more intense flavour. They can be stored for a few months, sometimes up to a year after harvest. Pumpkins and Butternuts are the most famous of the winter squashes.
Butternut is shaped like an elongated pear with beige skin and dense orange flesh, the fruits have a small seed cavity and keep quite well for a few months after harvest. This is a productive large butternut which grows up to 30cm long.
Sow seed on edge 1.5cm (1/2") deep in large modules or 8cm pots from April - May under glass at 20C (68F). Harden and transplant at 60-150cm apart.
