Spring Onions, also known as Salad Onions, Scallions and Bunching Onions are bred to not bulb up like regular onions. They are very hardy and are usually over wintered to produce crops in the spring. They can also be sown from late winter until the end of summer to produce onions right up to autumn.

White Lisbon is a very popular variety with an RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is very quick growing and bulbs slightly more than modern varieties with a slightly stronger flavour.

Sow seeds in modules, liberally (approx 6-10 seeds per module) at a depth of 1cm(½ in).

Transplant to 10cm apart in rows 15cm apart when plants are 5-10cm tall. Early sowings should be made undercover and planted out under fleece until the weather warms up.

Direct sow from march liberally in drills 1cm deep and 15cm apart.

No thinning is required and harvesting can usually start from about 8 weeks.

Successional sowing every 3 weeks should provide onions from April to Oct.
