The taste of true spinach is hard to beat. The leaves are soft and green, and contain vitamins A, C, K, and iron. Spinach needs a rich soil which holds moisture. This is important to stop it running straight to seed. It has been grown in ancient Persia, India and China for centuries, as well as in Europe from at least the 14th Century.

Matador is an all-year-round variety with dark green crinkled leaves and a beautiful rich flavour. It can be sown in succession from March onwards for for fresh spinach leaves throughout the season. It is a very prolific, slow to bolt, summer spinach that's been a gardener's favourite since Victorian times.

Grow as a cut-and-come again salad leaf, picked at the baby leaf stage, or harvest leaves fully grown. Spinach does best in dappled shade, especially during the hot summer months.

Sow as early as January in modules under cover.

Or sow direct from March - October.

For full size plants sow in shallow drills, 1-2cm deep in rows 30cm apart and thin as required to 15-25cm apart.

For cut and come again/baby leaf sow in shallow drills with 5-10cm between rows.

Sow in succession every month for a good supply.

Harvest individual leaves when they are big enough and the whole plant before it goes to seed.
