Kale is a trendy “superfood” but it is also a very old crop. It is a type of cabbage known as ‘Leaf Cabbage’ because it doesn’t form a head like ‘Headed Cabbage’. Kale is actually thought to be more similar to wild cabbage. It is known to have been cultivated in the Eastern Meditaranian region from at least 4000 years ago.
Kale produces sweet flavoured leaves from late summer through to early spring.
Red Russian has a blue-green wavy leaf with a red-purple stem. It is very sweet and tender and can be picked young and eaten raw as baby-leaf in salads.
The colour redens and the flavour sweetens in the colder months.
Sow April - May in modules or a seed bed in 1cm deep drills, rows 15cm apart.
When the plants are around 10-15cm tall, transplant to their final position 45-60cm apart.
Harvest individual leaves when needed from Oct till March.
