Sow; Feb-Jun

Marjoram ‘origanum majorana’ is an aromatic, perennial herb indigenous to Cyprus and southern Turkey. It was known to the Ancient Greeks and Romans as a symbol of happiness.

Marjoram is a type of oregano with slightly softer leaves, a little finer in texture with a less pungent flavour. The aroma is more perfumed and sweeter scented.

It is cold hardy but may not survive a harsh winter. Like oregano the flowers are very attractive to butterflies and bees.

We really love Oregano and Marjoram and use them to flavour all sorts of dishes, from pasta sauce and soups to pies and salads. We also love to dry the leaves for use all year round.

Sow undercover from Feb, sprinkle the seeds into seed trays of compost or if using modules put a pinch of seed into each.

Pot on when the seedlings are large enough to handle.

Harden off and transplant out at 30cm apart.

Direct sow from May onward.

Cut the flowering stems to encourage more leaf production but leave some flowers for the bees.
