Lemon Balm also known as Melissa is a perennial herb in the mint family.
It is an ancient herb with lemon scented leaves and white flowers that attract bees(The name Melissa is actually Greek for “Honey Bee”), it was planted around beehives to attract bees.
It is a very easy herb to grow and forms a small bush that grows vigorously and spreads vegetatively as well as through seeds.
Lemon Balm makes a lovely tea which is proven to improve sleep and helps with anxiety and stress. It can be dried or used fresh and is also good for flavouring fish or even making Lemon Balm Pesto.
Sow from March-June in a seed tray on the surface of seed compost and very lightly sprinkle some compost over the top. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Once all danger of frost has passed, transplant to final location. 30cm apart, rows 60cm apart.
Or plant in a large pot/container(recommended for small gardens/allotments as Melissa will spread.)
