Fennel is an attractive perennial herb with soft feathery leaves and umbels of very attractive yellow flowers(much loved by beneficial insects) atop of tall architectural stalks.
It is very similar to Dill and they can easily hybridise so are not recommended to grow together.
This herb is used for its anise flavoured leaves and seeds and is a very popular culinary herb especially used with fish.
It requires little maintenance apart from removing dead stems at the end of season. It is drought tolerant once established.
Interesting fact; Fennel was held sacred by the Anglo Saxons for its power against evil.
It also has many medicinal health benefits.
Used as a companion plant to deter aphids.
Sow Fennel direct as it does not like to be transplanted.
Sow thinly, 12mm (1/2in) deep, in drills 38cm (15in) apart. When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to 30cm (12in) apart. Keep ground weed free and water during dry periods.
Harvest leaves throughout the growing season and eat the seeds fresh or dried.
