Chives are a perennial herb, member of the allium family with hollow leaves tasting of mild onions. A small and easy to grow plant that does well in pots/containers.
It has little clusters of pretty purple-mauve flowers that are loved by bees.
Chives taste great in salads or added to scrambled egg and potato salad.
Sow Feb - May in trays on the surface of seed compost and cover with a sprinkling of compost. Place in a propagator or inside a clear polythene bag at 20-25°C until germinated.
Transplant to pots(7.5-9cm) and grow on in cooler temp.
After all risk of frost, harden off and plant out 30cm(12in) apart.
Can be sown direct in May-June 1.5cm(½ in) deep in rows 30cm apart.
