French Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are half-hardy annuals with a long cropping season.
Beans are a good source of Vitamin A and freeze well.
Blauhilde is a climbing french variety with beautiful, long, purple pods that remain tender even when larger.
It can grow to 9ft(275cm) tall with beans up to 30cm(although younger beans taste better). It’s high yielding and the beans turn green upon cooking.
Purple varieties also make picking easier because they stand out from the green foliage.
Sow from March-April in pots undercover, May-June direct outdoors.
Sow seeds approx. 2cm deep.
Once danger of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise plants before planting out at about 20cm apart.
Direct sow beans from May at 5cm deep, 20cm apart and rows spaced 60cm apart.
Keep plants well watered, especially during hot and dry conditions.
grow beans up canes, trellis or a wigwam structure to provide support.
