Cucurbita (Latin for gourd) is a genus of herbaceous vines in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, also known as cucurbits are native to the Andes and Mesoamerica. They are grown worldwide for their edible fruit, variously known as squash, pumpkin, or gourd. Squash comes in two types, Summer and Winter.

Summer squash are thin-skinned with a lighter, moist flesh. They are best eaten fresh. Courgettes are the most popular summer squash.

Winter squash have a harder skin and dense flesh with a more intense flavour. They can be stored for a few months, sometimes up to a year after harvest. Pumpkins and Butternuts are the most famous of the winter squashes.

Musquee de Provence is a heirloom French variety that produces large, ribbed fruits that weigh up to 8kg with a burnt orange/ochre colout that is dappled with dark green. It is a vigourous trailing plant that needs a lot of space and a sunny position.

The flesh makes delicious soups, pies, tarts, cakes and curries.

It produces many small pumpkins per plant. For larger fruits, simply stop the stems when 2 pumpkins have begun to develop and these should grow up to 4-7kg.

Sow seed on edge 1.5cm (1/2") deep in large modules or 8cm pots from April - May under glass at 20C (68F). Harden and transplant at 60-150cm apart.

Keep well watered if the weather is dry after planting and harvest the squashes when ready from September and before the first frosts.
