Early Purple Sprouting is a very popular variety for the veg patch, with its attractive purple florets and excellent taste.
The succulent purple spears are produced in abundance from late-March onwards, it crops over a long period.
The spears are ready to harvest around April (a year after sowing) when little else is cropping in the allotment/garden.
The plants will reach nearly a meter in height and spread.
Sow the seeds in April or May in a seed bed in a shallow drill. Allow 15 cm between drills. Thin to 7 cm between the plants as they grow and then transplant in summer when the plants are about 15 cm tall.
Transplant to the final position, about 1m apart and quite deep, up to the first leaves is fine.
Sprouting broccoli likes to be well-watered.
Harvest before the flowers start to open.
Keep picking and the side shoots will follow after the main shoots are cut.
